NO THINKING !
My friend Egor Torskoy commented this a few days ago on another post:
Still, what about the consistent mental/intellectual thinking? How such thinking is possible when there’s none “directing attention to or keeping attention on anything” at all? And if consistent mental/intellectual thinking just dissolves without grasping, then how to write text? I mean, not just 2-3 lines of text, when it’s possible to use “insight” thinking, but say an article?
*
Dear Egor,
Let me answer your questions from both reasoning and from my own experience.
In the last post about No Attention, the main point is: there is no phenomenon such as “attention”. What we usually considered “attention” is in fact inferred from what is currently appearing, when something appears instead of other things.
For example, when you are looking at a room then direct attention on a table, there really just a flow of appearing, the appearing of a room then the appearing of a table, and then there is a thought inferred from that appearing: “I just directed my attention to the table”. You can never experience what is called “attention” directly, because it’s only an inferred thought. The same mechanism applied to subject and object such as “I” and “table”, they are also just inferred from a moment of appearing.
Knowing the truth of “no attention” put a mind that usually want to “meditate on something” to rest. Because there is really no “meditate” and no “something”, they are seen to be both imagination inferred from appearing. Realizing that can not direct attention or keep attention on anything, the wanting to capture anything by attention is ended, and gradually attention is dissolved quite naturally.
Now the mind can rest freely without attention and there is an allowance for everything to appear naturally without grasping. The dissolving of attention is the beginning of non meditation.
As stated in the Six Expanses tantra:
“Through the skillful means of allowing focused attention to resolve naturally, samsara and nirvana blend in nonduality.
One who brings an end to recollections of the past, curbs anticipations of the future, and allows consideration of the present to fade naturally is what I call “a yogin who knows the equalness of the three times.”
In not fixating on previous states of mind, not relying on future states of mind, and not paying attention to present states of mind, one is a yogin who realizes the equalness of the three times.”
After you thoroughly understand this reasoning, now we can apply the same logic from “directing attention” to “thinking” to see the nature of thinking is NO THINKING !
Now, just try to think a thought, such as “I am trying to think this thought”.
Apart from the appearing of that thought, where is the “I” and the “trying” or “thinking”. You cannot directly experiencing anything other than the appearing of that thought, so “you” and “your trying” and “thinking” are only inferred from that appearing and can never be experienced directly. So “you” and “your trying to think this thought” are just inferences, just imaginations. So, the mode that a thought happening is: no one and no trying and no thinking underneath it to make it happen. Thoughts just appear naturally without anyone and any trying that cause its appearance. It is described as thoughts are “self-originated” and “spontaneously present”.
So, in reality, even when a series of thoughts appear, there is infact no trying and no thinking that make them appear. It is the real mode of thinking whether you realized this self-appearing or not. There is also no attention following thoughts. They are all imaginations inferred from the flow of empty appearing.
Now let’s go to your questions:
Q: Still, what about the consistent mental/intellectual thinking? How such thinking is possible when there’s none “directing attention to or keeping attention on anything” at all?
A: It seems that you are trying to think, that thoughts come from your trying. But in fact, the thinking is impossible because apart from the appearing of a flow thoughts, there really no phenomena such as “thinking” or “trying”, they are just inferred from that appearing.
Thinking is impossible but the appearing of what seemingly thoughts is possible. Whether thoughts appear in length or not, they appear spontaneously, self-originatedly, without a “thinker” and an act of “thinking” or “attention”. Let thoughts appear naturally, let them flow out as the radiance of the present empty clarity.
Q: And if consistent mental/intellectual thinking just dissolves without grasping, then how to write text? I mean, not just 2-3 lines of text, when it’s possible to use “insight” thinking, but say an article?
A: The natural appearance of this present awareness can be anything at all. It can appears as a flow of thoughts and text, long or short is not matter. When unrealized, this appearing comes with a grasping to the illusions of three: “I” and “thinking” and “thought”. When realized, appearing comes emptily and spontaneously without grasping to an subject such as “I”, to any “actions”, and to any object such as “thought”.
In fact, in the state of realization, thoughts are already seen directly as empty, as non-arising, as transparent, as the radiance of this natural clarity, as no different from non-thought. Even there is the appearing of what seemingly thoughts, there is really no thoughts in the realized state. So when you are one with the natural state, from there can shine forth any answer for any questions by the expressions of thoughts, without any thinking, without the duality of thought and non-thought!
As Longchenpa expressed in his Precious Treasury of the Basic Space of Phenomena:
“All-consuming thought patterns cannot be abandoned by being renounced, for they are the dynamic energy of awareness.
Their true nature is such that there are no distinctions, nothing to differentiate or exclude,
so that nature is not ensured by achievement, but arises as basic space.
Without rejecting samsara, you perceive it to be naturally occurring timeless awareness
Through the pure yoga of the dynamic energy of the vast expanse of being. “
It is good for now, I hope it can answer your questions, my dear friend. I will come back with another post about how thought is directly experienced as Dharmakaya, if needed.
❤ you,

Elvis Arrpegee Wow! This needs to be shared…
Ly Vu Ngoc Bich Totally agree! ♥️
Ly Vu Ngoc Bich Yesterday, I tried to meditate, and asked myself: “what is the table?”, “what is the sound?”, “what is the thought?”…
It was so incredible. There’s nothing!!!
Thank you so much, Master Trong Suốt! ♥️
Thao Ngo This is diamond!
Singha Vu Oh, thank giving.
The words are blooming on the sky ???? it make me so relax and peace. And may i share for my friend?
Egor Torskoy Dear Trong Suốt, thank You from the depths of my heart!
I’ve read and re-read Your answer and it helped to realize that even if there is no “I” and no separate “objects” with names-labels attached to them, even so, attention still lingering. That time the attention resemlbing some “beam” like beam of flashlight, and it is strange, because its not possible to find the source of that beam and there are no separate objects at the other end of the beam, just Singleness. But the beam itself is still there ) so if that beam is directed to the flow of thoughts, it often transforms into clinging and grasping. That was the problem/
Your answer helped me to realize that such beam of attention is transient and the best way for me is to rest in unfocused attention, so that beam will just dissolve.
Sure, I will wait for another post of Yours about direct experiencing of thoughts in Dharmakaya.
Love
Willem is there really a beam or just the absence of appearances.
Trong Suốt There is really no beam, “beam” is just inferred from empty appearance !
Willem Indeed, thank you for clarifying! And the question Egor. Took this morning to contemplate. From an ‘enlightened view’ everything seems reversed from our ordinary way of perceiving the world. Thank you _/|\_
Egor Torskoy Trong Suốt, thank You for that clarification. Emaho )
Egor Torskoy Dear Trong Suốt, may I ask You another question, also about thoughts?
In her “Last Instructions”, Machig Labdron said:
…mind itself, [natural and co-emergent]Has no support, has no object:
Let it rest in its natural expanse without any fabrication.
When the bonds [of negative thoughts] are released,
You will be free, there is no doubt.
As when gazing into space,
All other visual objects disappear,
So it is for mind itself.
When mind is looking at mind,
All discursive thoughts cease
And enlightenment is attained.
As in the sky all clouds
Disappear into sky itself:
Wherever they go, they go nowhere,
Wherever they are, they are nowhere.
This is the same for thoughts in the mind:
When mind looks at mind,
The waves of conceptual thought disappear.
As empty space
Is devoid of form, color or image,
So too, mind itself
Is free of form, color or image.
As the heart of the sun
Cannot be veiled by an eternity of darkness
So too, the realization of the ultimate nature of the mind
Cannot be veiled by an eternity of samsara.
Even though empty space
May be named or conventionally defined,
It is impossible to point it out as “this.”
It is the same for the clarity of mind itself:
Although its characteristics may be expressed,
It cannot be pointed out as “this.”
The defining characteristic of mind
Is to be primordially empty like space;
The realization of the nature of the mind
Includes all phenomena without exception.
Once discursive thoughts are totally abandoned,
Dharmakaya is no other than that.
Once the five poisons are totally abandoned,
The five wisdoms are no other than that.
Once the three poisons are totally abandoned,
The three kayas are no other than that.
Once conventional mind is totally abandoned,
Buddhahood is no other than that.
***
What do You think, does it mean – “when mind is looking at mind”?
I mean, I know that when mind is looking at mind, then truly “All discursive thoughts cease”. But this very movement when “mind looking at mind”, it still needs some recognition of the thought and then – small movement, tiny effort, but it is still dualistic, isn’t it? Or maybe I’m wrong and this “mind looking at mind’ is truly effectiive effortless non-dual way to deal with thoughts?
Love
Egor Torskoy It seems to me now after some “mind looking at mind” practice, that such method it is not suitable at all. While mind is looking at mind, deeper and deeper into the abyss, the flow of thoughts diminishes and even ceases. But it is impossible to be open in neverending freshness, while “mind looking at mind”, because instead of widely opening into vast space as it is, there is just withdrawing, mind dives into mind…
Trong Suốt Dear Egor Torskoy
“When mind looking at mind” is not a very experiential way of speaking. You can start with this practice, which has the same meaning and more experiential expression of “mind looking at mind”:
Looking toward whatever object before you, for example a table
But don’t look at the table, just look ahead,
Stare without an object for a minute or two
Now if you are lucky enough, there is a state of clarity without an object
Now if you ask “where is the table?”
and even the appearance of the table is in your vision, you find no “table” , there is just empty appearing
And the one who look also cannot be found when you ask “where is the I?”
This state is like a clear sky,
Empty of any object, and clearly knowing
It is like the sky looking at the sky
Nothing is found but the empty aware state is continuous
Emptiness and Awareness are inseparable
It is traditionally called “mind looking at mind”
Try this practice for yourself, my friend, and you can come to a conclusion like this:
When you look at mind, there is nothing to be seen.
And in this not seeing, you see the essence of mind.
